Thomas Henry Espinall Compton Espin

Obituary: MNRAS 95, 319 (1935), Obs. 58, 27 (1935)

Espin discovered 20 IC objects. 16 are "very" deep-sky-objects, 2 are star groups and 2 "not found". All were seen visually with a 17.25" Calver-reflector from his private observatory at Tow Law, Co. Durham, UK (erected 1888).

No. 10 in his first list [1] is IC 1369, found earlier by Peschüle in 1891. No. 6 in list [3] is the "Cocoon Nebula" IC 5146, seen visually by Espin on Aug. 8, 1899. But this object was discovered photographically on Oct. 11, 1893 by E. E. Barnard with the 6" Willard lens at Lick and independently by Max Wolf with his 6" camera at Königstuhl (July 28, 1894).
