Samuel Hunter

Hunter was an assistent of the 3rd Earl of Rosse at Birr Castle from Feb. 1860 to May 1864. He made some nice drawings of nebulae observed with the 72" refractor (e.g. M 51). In 1860-61 Hunter discovered two NGC-objects, both are galaxies in Eridanus: NGC 1335 and NGC 1699, rediscovered by d'Arrest and Lewis Swift, respectively. The objects can be found in: Parsons L., Observations of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars 1848-1878, Scient. Trans. Roy. Dublin Soc. Vol. II, 1-178 (1880).
