Wolf observed nebulae with the 40-cm Foucault reflector with silvered glass mirror that had been erected at Paris Observatory. In 1875 he reported about a comprehensive study of the Pleiades, including
micrometrical measurements of star positions. In 1878 he made a drawing of M 51, using the new equatorial 47.2-inch reflector by Martin/Eichens.
