Obituary: MNRAS 87, 251 (1927); Obs. 49, 293 (1926); PASP 38, 400 (1926); Pop. Astr. 35, 325 (1927)
Dreyer discovered 18 NGC-objects with Lord
Rosse's 72" reflector at Birr Castle. They are published in Lawrence
Parsons (4th Earl of Rosse) collection of all Birr observations; see:
Observations of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars Made With the Six-foot
and Three-foot Reflectors at Birr Castle From the Year 1848 up to the Year
1878, Scientific Transactions of the Royal Dublin Society Vol. II,
1878. The identifications in column "Other" refer to this work (G.C.
are from Dreyer's supplement). 13 objects are non-stellar. Dreyer found most
of the galaxies in the NGC 4005-group at the border of Leo and Come Berenices.
NGC 3069 is identical to IC 580 (Javelle, Mar. 22,
1892). One object found by Dreyer, the galaxy NGC 3698 in UMA (G.C. 5565,
found Mar. 18, 1876), is identical to NGC 3695 (G.C. 5564) discovered by Ball
in 1867 with the same instrument.
