Ralph Copeland

Obituary: MNRAS 66, 164 (1906): PASP 17, 205 (1905); VJS 42, 230 (1907), AN 170, 29 (1906)

Copeland found 38 NGC-objects, most of them with Lord Rosse's 72" reflector at Birr Castle; 34 were new. The Planetary Nebulae were found by visual spectroscopy at Dun Echt (Scotland) and during an Andes expedition. Seven of the galaxies in Leo form the famous "Copeland Septet". The Planetary Nebula, NGC 6879 in Sagitta was first seen by Pickering in 1883. There is no source for NGC 3736.
