Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters

Peters discovered 17 NGC objects with the 13.5" f/13.3 Spencer refractor at Litchfield observatory, Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y. (erected in 1858). 11 objects are galaxies, 6 are stars or star groups. References: [1] Studies of nebulae. Series I, Copernicus I, 51 (1881); [2] Studies of nebulae. Series II, Copernicus II, 54 (1882). The magazine Copernicus, an International Journal of Astronomy was editied by J.L.E. Dreyer and R. Copeland, but only three volumes were published (I: 1881, II: 1882, III: 1884). The dates "1860" and "1883" are estimated; Peters gives no dates for these objects (for NGC 3492, 4309, and 4604 there is even no reference). The galaxy NGC 4353 is identical to IC 3266, found later by Schwassmann. Peters is mentioned as co-observer by Dreyer for NGC 475 (Marth No. 43), NGC 3328 (Tempel), and NGC 4116 (Lord Rosse III). Peters also found the galaxy NGC 4182 in Virgo, but it is identical to NGC 4180 (W. Herschel).
